The Steps method is one of the best chess training methods in the world. It is the official training method of the dutch chess federation and is getting more and more popular in other country's.
The Steps Method contains several types of books. First there are the workbooks step 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. For these books there are also instruction manuals for the trainer. Next to the "normal" workbook the Extra workbook and the Plus workbook are available. The students will be able to do more exercises on a slightly higher level and consequently remain busy with the same step for a longer period of time. Students who go to quickly are often not ready for the next step. This situation can be prevented with the Extra and Plus workbooks by giving them additional exercises. Read More-> Read more ...
The Steps Method workbook contains exercises which run parallel with the lessons in the manual. When progressing in the workbook, certain types of exercises are repeated and mixed exercises are given. The workbook also contains reminders for the student.
The Stepping Stones have been created for young kids (age 4-8) who require a different appraoch then older kids. The contents of the two Stepping Stones workbooks cover the contents of Step 1. Part one of Stepping Stones runs from lesson 1 to 6 of Step 1 which covers the movements of pieces and basic techniques like giving chess and attacking. Part two of the Stepping Stones runs from lesson 7 to 15 which covers giving mate, notation, twofold attack and other subjects. Eddy Sibbing is the co-author of the Stepping Stones.
The Steps Method chess training software products which can be bought are an excellent addition to the steps workbooks.
Chess Tutor Step 1 / 2 / 3: The best when using used for self study or used as additional support for the lessons given by a chess trainer. Under the surface a chess engine is running giving feedback on the answers of a chess student (moves or comments) and the resulting positions can be played against the chess computer. Therefore the chess student gets excellent feedback, improving the learning experience. In Step 1 the engine plays on Step 1 level. The chess student and chess teacher can follow the results by means of flash cards. The flash cards show which lessons, plus lessons, exercises or games have been completed.
Chess Tutor (Tasc Chess CD 2): The best for the higher Steps 4 and 5, and therefore for the advanced chess player. Additional the CD contains the chess engine Chessica. This is a nice chess engine, but does not run on 64 bit systems anymore, so just regard it as a bonus if it still works. The exercises must be run from the CD, but this is not a big disadvantage in practice.
DGT Chess trainer upgraded: this is very comparable with the new Chess Tutor Step 1 / 2 / 3 CD Roms, but it does not contain the plus lessons, and contains less exercises and games. Additionally it contains Fritz 9.0, which is an excellent chess engine.
DGT Chess trainer: this is very comparable with the Chess Tutor (Tasc Chess CD 2) CD: However this CD does contain only exercises for Step 1 - 3. Additionally it contains Fritz 9.0, which is an excellent chess engine.
