For competition the 45 mm wooden checkerboards are mostly choosen. Because of storage space, cost or transport weight the plastic checkerboards are a regular choice as well.
Checkerboards are often made of wood, because it is quieter on the eyes. Therefore the finish is matt. More polished checkerboards look and play nicer. Making a matt finish is much more laborious because the checkerboard is repeatedly sanded and then lackered. The type of wood and the veneer thickness are also very crucial to the price. Thinner veneer or printed fields are usually the cheapest, but they wear out faster.
